Window Tinting Legality 101

August 11, 2015

When deciding on a new window tint for your car, there are a number of variables to consider. The most important factor of your decision is one that can often be overlooked, however.

Each state has laws in place to regulate the degree to which you tint your windows. The laws, among other things, state the percentage of light that your various windows must allow through, which is measured by a meter. The side windows and rear window will generally have different percentage thresholds, but that isn’t true of every state.

Knowing your state’s laws on window tinting is essential when customizing your ride. The last thing you want when driving around town showing off your car’s new look is to get pulled over for violating a seemingly simple regulation. Laws vary greatly by state, so it’s important that you look up the state or states that you will spend the most time driving in. For instance, window tinting in Georgia must allow more than 32% of light through the rear window, whereas tinting in Arkansas must only allow more than 10%. If you spend considerable time driving in multiple states, it is advisable that you follow the strictest state’s laws to ensure you will always be in compliance.
