Northwest Vista College
The Northwest Vista College is an accredited community college in San Antonio that is part of the five Alamo Colleges District. The college has an enrollment of over 18,000 students. Most of the courses offered at NVC are two year associate degrees or one year certificate courses.
The students are handled through a myriad of study methods including; traditional classroom studying, evening classes, internet study, hybrid study modes involving a myriad of different modes, distance learning and also through weekend study. The different modes make it easy for students worldwide to join the college.
The NVC was founded in 1995 and it started with only a handful of students. The college started after a land donation was done by the World Savings and Loan Association. During the early years of the college the lead program was Semiconductor Manufacturing Program.
It was started by the college in collaboration with several corporates. The college is set on 137 acres of land. The first building to be opened in the campus was the Mountain Laurel Hall. The college saw significant growth the first year it was started by getting a record enrollment of 2500 students up from just 12 that they started with.
NVC is a notable center of academic excellence. The college offers many associate degree course and certificate courses including; Associate of Arts, Associate of applied Sciences, Certificate of Completion and marketable Skills award and so many others.
The college also offers transferable courses for students interested in transferring to the four year degree programs. This is a 2+2 system where a 2 year course at NVC earns two years credit at the university instead of having to undertake the whole 4 years. The college had its first graduation class of 20 in 1998.
The classes are also not very huge since there are various study modes that distribute the students well. This ensures that the students can perform extremely well in the courses they are pursuing.
The college also endeavors to provide for its students and therefore has achieved a $1 million scholarship endowment for the students. That’s a good mark considering it is a pretty young college.
NVC has not relented in performance in various sectors. For instance there is the Mathematics Paths project started at NVC that has gained national recognition. The project was nominated for the prestigious Bellwether Award. In 2017, NVC was also named for to top 10 finalist list. For a new college the awards and accolades to the college name are meant to increase exponentially.
Northwest Vista College has a vibrant campus life. The college aims at supporting each student with opportunities to succeed. The college engages the community through alumni, business and other means.
Students are also given an opportunity to support each other for the sake of their own success. In the years to come the college is expected to develop further physically, have a bigger enrollment and also provide better opportunities for their students.
