University of the Incarnate Word
The University of the Incarnate Word is a private university which is managed and operated under the Catholic Church. Its main campus is in San Antonio where it sits on a 154 acres land. The university has other pilot campuses to be able to reach more people and the online program enables students to study remotely.
The university pilot campuses are in the northwest and northeast San Antonio, China, Mexico, and Germany. The university has seen establishment and growth of Incarnate Word High School, co-educational high school, St. Anthony Catholic High School, St. Anthony’s elementary school and St. Peter Prince of the Apostles elementary schools. This has been possible through the university’s Brainpower Connection program.
Brief History
The school came to be after Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word came to San Antonio to assist in cholera treatment. This was in 1869, and in 1881 the school was opened as Incarnate Word School. College curriculum was only added in 1909 and this saw the school name changed to College and Academy of the Incarnate Word.
Courses Offered at the University
The University of the Incarnate Word offers its students an opportunity to be in their programs which can be either in; Undergraduate, Graduate, Doctorate or Professional Programs.
Undergraduate Program
The University offers undergraduates seven baccalaureate degrees which can be under their area of study. The students’ needs to go through the application process at the University and can also be done online.
Graduate Programs
This program prepares students to practice the chosen career professionally. There are seven graduate-level degrees offered at the university and a student needs to major in their chosen discipline.
Doctorate Programs
The doctorate program offered at the university is mostly to prepare students for professional leadership and scholarly research. There is a doctorate plan that can be accessed online or at the university.
Professional Programs
There is currently two professional-level programs being offered at the University. Students can get application forms online or at the university to either enroll in, Pharmacy or Optometry Professional Programs
Entry Requirements at the University of the Incarnate Word.
The University is open to all who would wish to study in this Christian based Catholic University. There has been a high level of application and the review process may take up to three weeks.
For the students who are applying to join the university as a freshman, they need the following to register:
- Completed Application Forms for Admission
- High School Transcript
- ACT and/or SAT scores
- G.E.D. scores (where applicable)
- CLEP Test Score or AP/Achievement (where applicable)
- Dual credit transcripts (where applicable)
A student may also carry Letter(s) of Recommendation and/or Campus Interview/Visit but these are optional.
High school graduates can be considered for admission but they should meet the minimum qualifications of 16 Carnegie units of high school work.
- 4 units of English
- 3 units of mathematics (geometry and algebra I, II and)
- 3 units of natural science
- 3 units of social science
- 1 unit of fine arts

Apart from giving one an opportunity to learn in the many discipline areas available, there are other fun activities that one can engage in.
