How to Protect Your Car from Rain Damage

March 15, 2016

If you just finished cleaning your car from the salt and snow of winter, don’t rest yet. As April approaches, so does the legendary rainy season and a new enemy for your vehicle. It’s true – rain can damage your ride.

At Tint World®, we obsess over keeping our cars, trucks and SUVs spotless no matter the season. If you want to keep your ride fresh even in a downpour, here are our car detailing and reconditioning tips on protecting it from rain damage.

  • Wash it regularly: Water marks are the most common side effect of rain. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind dirt and other minerals that take away the shine from your paint. One of the easiest ways to deal with this and protect your clear coat is to wash your car regularly (about two or three times a month) during the rainy season. Doing this will stop the buildup from getting so bad, it can’t easily be cleaned.
  • Protect it with wax: Automotive wax adds an extra layer of paint protection to maintain your car’s shine from dirty rain water. Many products can provide up to a week of clear coat protection and while liquid waxes can help, premium paste wax will have the longest lasting hold. Consult a professional detail shop to get the best bang for your buck with automotive wax.
  • Protect it with film: Taking the concept of wax one step further, paint protection film is the ultimate safeguard from harsh rain. Made of strong and nearly undetectable urethane, film can not only protect your paint from water marks, but road debris and scratch marks as well. It’s recommended to have paint protection film installed by professionals who can computer-cut the material for an exact fit the first time.
